All are welcome

Canon William J. Spaid

The Episcopal Church, through the work of its General Convention, has affirmed the role of gay and lesbian people within the church for over thirty years including full access to the ordination process, and offered historical support of gay and lesbian persons as children of God and entitled to full civil rights in the larger community.  This has been affirmed in our most recent General Convention with the approval of liturgical rites for the blessing of same sex marriages.

We believe this is consistent with our biblical and theological understanding where the Word of God is considered living and true, and the ancient texts are read prayerfully and in context of their own day and time, and by asking ourselves what does this text say about how God is being revealed and calling us to act faithfully in our own day.  Using our Anglican heritage of scripture, tradition, and reason, the Episcopal Church has discerned – through prayer, study, conversation, experience and the voice of convention affirmed by the House of Bishops and House of Deputies (made up of lay and clergy members from all the dioceses of the church) to affirm over and over again our baptismal covenant and heritage to respect the dignity of every human being and to seek and serve Christ in all persons.
