Ministry of the week: Bread for the World helps end hunger

bread for the world 2“Bread for the World is a collective Christian Voice urging our nation’s decision makers to end hunger at home and abroad. By changing policies, programs and conditions that allow hunger and poverty to persist, we provide help and opportunity far beyond the communities where we live…Bread for the World works in a bipartisan way through a network of thousands of individual members, churches and denominations in all U.S. congressional districts. Together, we build the political commitment needed to overcome hunger and poverty.”  – Bread for the World website, WWW.BREAD.ORG.

The Bread for the World ministry has been active at Grace for many years. Currently, it is coordinated by our chapter of the Episcopal Peace Fellowship and expressed primarily through our participation in the offerings of letters campaigns. Once or twice a year, members of the congregation are invited to remain for a few minutes after worship to write brief letters to our members of Congress about current legislation pertaining to hunger. Our letters join those of many other congregations as an effective “citizens lobby” on behalf of the poor and the hungry in our own country and around the world. This is one way in which we work to fulfill the purpose in our Baptismal Covenant to “strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being.”
