Voice of the vestry: the privilege of outreach

By Mike Cotter

Vestry member Mike Cotter

In addition to serving on our Vestry for the past two years, I’ve also been pleased to volunteer in the church office every Thursday afternoon for over five years. Assisting Ann and Erika carry out various behind the scenes tasks that help Grace Church continue to be a model faith community has been an honor and a window into who we are. Ann Hackett and Erika Shenk-Tessin are two of the hardest working individuals I have ever met. Thank you Ann and Erika for all you do!

By working in the office, I have been fortunate to witness first hand the workings of the numerous outreach ministries Grace Church offers to many individuals in the greater Grand Traverse region who come to us for help. It is not unusual when I answer the phone in the church office to be able to inform a caller about the many survival services of Jubilee House or how they can feed their family by dropping by our newly relocated Spedding Food Pantry.

The list of support to our patrons goes on: how they can partake of a delicious, hot community Friday lunch served in our parish hall, or that there is no need to sleep out in the cold when Grace hosts Safe Harbor, or if they come into the office, we can give them a BATA bus pass to get to and from work or school, or assistance with a gas bill to keep their house warm, or help with an electric bill to keep their lights on. These examples are just a few of the numerous ways Grace Church outreach is helping our community.

Thank you to all Grace Church parishioners who through your generous stewardship offerings of time, talent or treasure provide substantial giving to our outreach ministries a reality. It is a privilege to communicate to a person in need that calls or comes into the office that GRACE CHURCH IS A HELPING CHURCH. Thank You!
