Voice of the Vestry: Beacons of faith

By Mary Merrill

Vestry member Mary Merrill

Two of Grace’s dearly loved parishioners recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary by renewing their marriage vows. If you were present for this worship service, you know how touching the ceremony was. Frank and Joyce Faustman were wed on June 29th, 1944, while the world was at war. The timing of this wedding is especially meaningful to me because my parents were married the same year while my father was home on furlough. Pausing to embrace love, faith, hope and the sacrament of marriage at a time when “all the world is out of control” is moving…to say the least. To stay in love and faith for 70 years (and counting) is a rare and precious gift from God!

faustman_joyceandfrankDuring these years of marriage, Joyce and Frank have been true ambassadors of welcome and service. Yet, they would be the first to point out that we are blessed to have many true disciples of Christ within our fold. We are surrounded by children of God who are always thinking of others and their well-being. Hands and hearts guided by faith and love do the work of God at Grace. Just think of the number of ministries Grace has! Think of the outreach Grace is able to offer our greater community! My heart is truly grateful for all the loving souls who give freely of their time and talents in service to God. As Joyce has told me, “Everything we have comes from God. We give back what we have received.”

Do you have senior mentors in faith at Grace? I feel Frank and Joyce have been that for me. They have demonstrated ways to humbly follow Jesus in selfless acts of love. They have been and continue to be beacons of faith for me and my family.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres. Love never fails.  1 Corinthians 13:4, 13:7, 13:8
